PepsiCo Supports Call to Action on Millennium Development Goals

Purchase, NY – July 31, 2007 – PepsiCo, one of the world's largest food and beverage companies operating in more than 200 countries, was among several businesses to support the Declaration launched today at the United Nations calling for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. Indra Nooyi, Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo, supported the Declaration, which was announced by UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and urged the private sector to join with governments, civil society and faith groups to work together toward meeting the MDGs. The Goals were established by the United Nations in 2000 to work toward improving the lives of the world's most impoverished citizens, and include eradication of extreme hunger and poverty, promotion of gender equality, and ensuring environmental sustainability.

PepsiCo issued the following statement:

We welcome the initiative led by Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, and are honored to be involved. The Millennium Development Goals present an enormous opportunity to deliver lasting change. We agree with the Prime Minister and Secretary General that now is the time for governments, business, faith groups and civil society to come together to ensure these goals are achieved. Stretch goals have always motivated mankind, and we are confident that by working together, these Goals can be met and global poverty tackled.

This initiative is consistent with how we approach our business: striving to strike a balance between strong financial results and advancing the interests of the communities we serve and the environment in which we live and work – an approach of continuous improvement that we call "Performance with Purpose."
